This catalogue accompanies a physical exhibition of the same name held across the SCA Gallery and adjoining spaces at the Old Teachers’ College, The University of Sydney from 29 November – 7 December 2024. 

SCA New Contemporaries invites you to explore the work of more than 100 students across our 2024 graduating cohort. Spanning disciplines including Screen Arts, Photography, Painting, Printmedia, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, Jewellery and Object, the works within both the online and in-person presentations represent the capstone of degrees including the Bachelor of Visual Arts, Bachelor of Visual Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies, Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), Master of Film and Screen Arts and research Master of Fine Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.

"A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step" is an art project that explores the relationship between the individual and the future through photography. The title of the work is taken from the famous saying of the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, which conveys that no matter how long the journey, it begins with the first step at your feet. This idea runs through the core theme of the work: by photographing the eyes and shoes of twenty-five characters from different backgrounds, they show their emotional and psychological states at a particular moment.

Yixin Zhang is an undergraduate student at the University of Sydney’s School of Art, majoring in Visual Arts with a minor in Art History. Her current project, titled “A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step,” explores the collective human experience through portraits of 25 individuals from diverse social backgrounds, reflecting her deep engagement with visual storytelling and conceptual themes.
