31 Heads features six unique methods of expanded painting. Each work in this series creatively reflects its reference's 3D form. This form is then wrapped in a 'skin' of acrylic paint. Some of the heads were painted around their 3D forms before being flattened into 2D nets. Others are uncannily painted onto uniform mannequin heads to emphasise the impact of form on likeness. A few, which emerge from the wall, were both sculpted and painted, considering both as a continuous and complete process. The remaining heads attempt to composite together multiple images of the face into one (a continuation of cubist principles). Despite their many differences, the heads are all intrinsically linked - they all represent a methodical shift away from the typical illusory portraiture into a more individually considered approach to the head form.

Kate Leckie is an artist who mostly uses paint to depict familiar subjects in experimental ways. In her most recent work featuring a number of painted portraits, she has expanded her practice to include a number of non-traditional 3D methods. Her uncanny heads play with form, colour and methodology. They are manifested from ideas of how portrait painting could involve 3D thinking.
