The memories of who I was, hold sway over who I am. Recollections prompted by years of returning, commemorated in photographs of my own making. In this remembrance, attachment is formed and location becomes place. Down by the water I trace my teenage footsteps. At the beach I feel the warmth of the fires we built. In the cave I smile at the thought of what even then, sounded special.
My experiences all reverberate in conversation, discussing what was not known and has been learned. These places I believed to be mine have been known for millennia - and continue to be known - with names that acknowledge the significance of what resides within. To reconcile my own confusion is to lay bare this inner dialogue. To shape my present experience in hopes for more is to consider the memories from the places of my making.
This work was created on the lands of the Gayamaygal, Gadigal and Jerrinja. The sovereignty of these lands has never been ceded by its First Nations peoples and their connections to Country continue without end.
A special thank you to Paul Cooper and Timothy Osborne for their invaluable contributions to the creation of this work.
