In my artwork, "Nothing at all", I explore the expectations placed on women and the emotional impact it creates. The emotions represented in each artwork is not only a personal response to the world, but also something that many women can relate to. Melancholy, Dissociation and Mania are the three emotions depicted and the angel wings are an embodiment of these emotions and juxtapose the purity they are originally meant to represent. Each emotion, while often intense and overwhelming, has a sense of emptiness and nothingness to it.
Melancholy is represented through the drooping and sagging wings, pulling the figure down and creating a sense of weight throughout the artwork. It pulls the viewer's eyes down to nothing; the embodiment of melancholy. Dissociation is shown through the symmetry of the wings creating a stillness in the artwork and disconnection from reality. The wings surround the figure and cover the background, adding to the disconnected and engulfing feeling of emptiness. Mania is more chaotic with the wings themselves being split apart, covering not just the figure, but the background as well, drawing the viewer's attention to many different places. It is meant to overwhelm and illustrate distorting and consuming thoughts.
