Vivacious and profound figural expressions wander the confines of the canvas and capture the viewer’s attention with their richly saturated tone. The central piece, adorned in a soft pink hue, beckons us into the realm of vivid colours and fervent detached faces. Fragmented profiles are meticulously assembled, and their gazes erratically meander in various directions. Soft sculptures are pushed and pulled from the canvas into our space and break free from the flatness. Some are suspended on delicate strings that guide us through a sensory immersion of colours, patterns and forms. Surrounding this centrepiece are two additional canvases in vibrant yellow and orange; hovering fragmented faces are strewn against the bright backdrop, with portions of their visages absent or disconnected from the other half. The centre faces seemingly superficial and veiled with makeup, mask their true complexion, and perhaps their authentic self. The brightly coloured and expressive figures contrast from the neutral-toned central figures and find themselves inverted or marginalised at the edges of the canvas; these alienated figures reveal the true and unfiltered emotional undertone, and vociferously plead to be heard. Patterned soft forms and bellowing stitched lines explode out from the figures as they release the pressure and constraint from societal conventions. The centre work also explores the loss of our inner child as we attempt to reassemble ourselves to suite external influences.

Naomi Ferreira is an emerging contemporary artist living in Sydney, Australia who specialises in mixed media and explores the tensions between figural representation and abstraction. She uses a chromatic colour palette to articulate the emotional tug of war experienced when attempting to discover her self-identity. Her preferred medium is painting and fibre art, and she occasionally explores ceramics in her art practice. A combination of 2-D and 3-D allows her to achieve a multi-layered product.
