Inspired by both storybook illustrations and biblical triptychs alike, The Self, The Other, and The Knight is an autobiographical series of mixed media paintings that depict the life of the artist across the span of two decades. The artwork examines the influential nature of literature, beginning with the personal influence of Christian tales of judgement and then stretching into the thematically lighter realm of fairy tales and mythology.
The artwork chronicles the artist’s developing understanding of their own gender identity and sexuality through self-inserting as various characters in the stories that the series spans. The repeating motif of the sword is both wielded by and against the artist across a variety of circumstances, representing both societal and personal expectations.

Working primarily in painting, but occasionally venturing into the realm of illustration and print, Lizzie Sutton is a Sydney-based artist who specializes in overly complicated works that never fail to take longer than they should to produce. Drawing from autobiographical roots, their works deal with familial ties, the Church, and an eclectic canon of literature.
