This work is an excerpt from my MFA exhibition, Nothing is certain, said The Curtain, where padded velvet shapes and mobile curtains reimagine the work of underappreciated modernist interior designer Lilly Reich. Throughout my Masters project, curtains have acted as theatrical props to navigate the complexities of motherhood. When viewed through an autobiographical lens, curtains convey my desire for transformation, utopian realms and joy, embodying resistance to the limitations of conventionality. Which may really be a discussion about access, visibility, and inclusion.

Ali Noble is an Australian artist based on Gadigal Wangal land, Sydney. Noble’s research, on textile architecture, or curtains, consistently articulates meaningful questions relating to gender, eroticism, and speculative futures. What new spaces can we create? What of joy? What of fantasy?
During her MFA candidature Noble was awarded the Fauvette Loureiro Travel Scholarship, and The David Harold Tribe Memorial Research Scholarship (Sculpture). In 2024 she will present work at First Draft.
