‘I wander into a parade,’ is a collection of abstract works painted on wood panels of varying sizes. This work introduces itself as a vivid, euphoric festival of colours. It is eye-catching; bright, multicoloured pieces arranged like an explosive starburst. Each piece is small and thin, an applause of whimsical, delicate brush strokes and colours create an array of biomorphic, phantasmagorical forms. Friendly creatures and monsters greet the viewer with a bow.
Each individual piece of the collection boasts a different, unique story. To Carmen, every creature is a celebration; a captured moment in time. Each and every creature exists as a byproduct of joy; of passion and interest and jubilance. For the artist, her creatures each reflect a moment, little bits of inspiration hidden in all of her pieces that only she can see.
You, the audience, wander into a parade. A bright, joyful parade; cheers and applause greet you as friendly creatures with strange, bright looks meet your gaze as you pass them by. You can’t help but to join the festivities, celebrating along.
⁂
Indulgent in the simple day-to-day joys of life, Carmen Lau is a Sydney-based artist who is often seen with her head in the clouds. Though often exploring different illustrative and sculptural media, she primarily works as a painter. She unabashedly allows her passions and interests to drive her process. Her works tend to end up reflective of the moment they were made; and if you look a little closer, you might be able to find little bits and pieces of the many things that bring Carmen joy.
