Song Phan
About
This project is a journey to find the meaning of life and death through the perspective of a Contemporary Buddhist artist, which is developed out of a collection of my previous artworks.
Bio
Song Phan is a Buddhist-based artist from Vietnam who came to Australia to enrol in the Sydney College of the Arts Bachelor of Visual Art programme. She mostly uses painting, ceramics, sculpture, and installation as her mediums. Growing up in a traditional Vietnamese Buddhist family, while at the same time having the opportunity to encounter an international studying environment from a young age, Song felt increasingly estranged from her family’s heritage and beliefs. Her works mostly explore these internal conflicts between traditional and contemporary, spirituality and reality, and religion and science. Her art journey, however, aims to find a balance between these two viewpoints, to re-establish a connection with her roots, and to identify her genuine inner self. Song considers her art as a “conversation” she can have with the viewers, showing them how the world seems to her while allowing them to interpret and respond in their own context.
