“I was walking in the woodland: Knowing Objects and Places” and “Bibelots and Abditories” (2022) set out to interrogate questions of knowing objects and places. The work acts to gather a collection of objects whilst traversing on foot through different locations. In the translation of found objects, the following questions emerge: how do we know objects and places? How are found objects related to the feeling of a moment in place? And how can their uncovering be documented? What happens to objects and places in the processes of written, photographic, and drawn translation? In the artistic translative act, and in bringing found items into conversation with one and other, object facsimiles are given the authenticity and aura of things. The work seeks to demonstrate the integrity of artistic translation as an alternative archival action and a means of getting closer to truly knowing objects and places.
Bio
Lucy Marquand is an interdisciplinary image and object maker whose work often explores the processes of collecting and categorising with a particular interest in the effects of photographic and drawn translation. Her practice is frequently led by interaction with and immersion in nature, and engages with printmaking, drawing, text and writing as essential modes of communication and creative output. Her recent work examines the effects of disparate objects brought into conversation with each other through different material translations and responds to the question: how do we know objects and places?
