Luci Schmidt
About
The work explores the concept of an ‘Artist’ and what it takes to be an artist in society. Musical artists express themselves through their instrumental and vocal abilities, and when successful in their career, promote themselves and their talents through visual media such as an album cover. By doing so, the image of the artist is as important to pop culture and the upward trajectory of their career, as the success of their music.
My artwork is a play on traditional portraiture, in which I portray myself, the artist, in the style of an album cover. Using humour and the theme of irony, the portraits imitate the confidence and egocentric success of celebrities through the scope of an emerging artist. By doing so, the celebrity image and the emerging artist rival and contest their journey to stardom.
Bio
Luci Schmidt is an emerging artist working in the Sydney region. Her love of painting originated in high school, where the art practice worked as a form of therapy and self-expression. In her practice today, she reflects on these memories of adolescence to prompt and drive her artistic vision. Using mainly oil paints, Luci demonstrates detail and expression through line and colour, focusing on themes of the body, anxiety, and reflection in her portrait-style works.
