About
Our natural environment moves, changes, decays, and grows often imperceptible to everyday human observation and understanding. A measure of time far greater in comparison than to that of our own human lives. With the change in geological epoch into the age of the Anthropocene, a comprehension of ‘deep time’ in this manner extends beyond basic human capabilities. A concept slowly becoming more obscure in the context of our current global society who regularly witness such extreme changes to our environment, ones which often take millennia to manifest. In a civilisation so desensitised to near apocalyptic events, how do we communicate such ideas in an effective manner?
Utilising materials with juxtaposing qualities and values, this work materialises how although the ephemerality of ice is guaranteed, the ever-enduring state of its sandstone counterpart permits the ice to be continually replaced.
The creation of a cycle of recurrence until one or the other intervenes in a way which halts it all together. The merging of both materials creates a narrative of disquieting degradation yet reveals a dependence on the other to ensure the fulfilment of its own nature.
