About
그 중간의 어딘가 (Geu jung-gan-ui eodinga) defining “Somewhere in the middle” is an installation work that is based on the issue of cultural identity within 2nd generation immigrants. 2nd generation immigrants face challenges between the culture of their parents and the culture of the country they live in, generating difficulties from two or more cultures.
This work engages to portray the idea through clothing by creating a fusion work that takes the aspects of both cultural and contemporary fashion into premises. The idea of blending the two has led to depict the combination of the two different sides and cultures.
Clothing is an identification tool that functions to determine the symbolic boundaries between people. Fashion and clothing are fields in which clothing is used to create and reveal cultural and social identities.
Therefore, I have used clothing as an expressive tool to express the impressions and perspectives of my personal boundaries of culture. Thus, trying to search and understand where I stand to be to this day as an Australian-Korean perceiving two different cultures aligning myself somewhere in the middle.
