Kristen Rhodes-Hasler
About
There is a Rhythm work considers the ephemeral and ethereal re-contextualisation of memory. The work is guided by a video taken when my grandmother passed away, projected onto a veiled glass. Through slumping the glass, a process where it is slowly brought to a high temperature that allows it to move and start to melt, and is then brought down so that it freezes the glass in this state of movement, it causes it to exist in a permanent state of change yet in solidity. This quality in the glass obscures the memory and allows the viewer to experience an ethereal ad ephemeral moment. Surrounded by singing from my Grandmother’s Kiribati (Gilbertese) community at her passing, the singing now fills the room, surrounding the glass and somewhat indistinct and amorphic video.
