Lucy Thurston
About
Portrait in Progress, 2022, serves as an unconventional self-portrait. The artist questions ‘If our mind was a house and our memories formed the rooms, what would be in them?’. From this, Thurston continued to explore their interest in personal narrative, memory and life chapters; creating four collages to represent phases of their life. Realised as sculptural work consisting of dioramas and repurposed books, Thurston aims to capture the energy of life, the experience of living, and our relationship to memories. While this work focuses on one individual’s story, we are each the author, editor and critique to our own narrative. While it is exciting to consider what the next chapter may be, the work celebrates the ones that got us here.
