I try to create my artwork from the practice of Dadaism.
This footage is from the 1960s, 90s and 2020s in China. The corresponding historical context of the footage is the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen Square incident, and the Covid lockdown in China, respectively. The decades after the Tiananmen Square incident are one of the few times when contemporary China enjoyed relative domestic peace. Currently, Orwellian stories are taking place in every corner of China in relation to the Chinese government’s “Covid zero” policy. The Chinese government has deleted all the video records of violence committed through administrative force, and no one is allowed to discuss or publish them.
I think an artist’s work is not only to explore personal feelings but to also serve as an important witness and recorder of time and history. If this video can make the audience feel uneasy and anxious, then my purpose has been achieved, and the transmission of information and emotions is what I want to achieve.
