About
The Permanent Fall of Kuragari
In recent events of the COVID-19 Pandemic becoming a further catalyst sparking an already lit flame around racism in society, asian hate violence has increased dramatically. Not only are we seeing such violence on the streets but also online, where asian stereotypes are heightened in advertisement and dating apps. It has come to my attention looking closely at the origins of Asian Stereotypes, can be seen by viewing and analysing early 1900s Hollywood films portraying Asian women as sexual beings for the male gaze. Living in a society where racism still exists is heartbreaking revealing how little we have grown to overcome such stereotypes. My work combines these two worlds together, capturing snapshots from an inspired 1900s Hollywood films exploring the white male protagonists dominance over a stereotypical Japanese woman and placing real life texts messages Asian women on dating apps have received. This piece becomes confronting from each angle of society, revealing the true flaws and guilt of the lack of awareness we share.
