About
My work is driven by the power to uncover hidden meaning and reimagine past worlds. The female subject as she has appeared throughout the European painting tradition is a subject at once all too seen and not seen at all. By combining painted collage and mixed media practices, my works act as ‘windows’ into alternate realities where ladies of the canon may become the agents of their own storytelling. Polarising perceptions of women have shaped our understanding of their role within the art canon as ‘passive’ participants. My tiny appropriations strive to reinforce the subjects’ integrity, strength, and freedom. But perhaps they also raise more questions than they answer, namely are attempts to imbue historical works of women with a modern feminist sensibility no more honest than those of the patriarchal conditions from which they arose?
