About
Inspired by Schopenhauer’s theory of The Hedgehog’s Dilemma, I created a work that dissects the turmoil of human intimacy with others and with the self. The installed work consists of two main components: a sculpture and a performance.
In a sense, I created an anthropomorphised version of the hedgehog. The outer, plain surface of the wearable sculpture is akin to our human skin that protects and covers the unsightly, abject aspects of the self that lies deeper within, hidden from prying eyes. Underneath, textured pieces are sewn and dyed in a variety of colours, they carry carefully stitched fabrics and gaudy jewels. From up close and afar, they are simultaneously alluring, attractive, but repulsive and unsettling, portraying the conflicting characteristics of the intimate self.
Once worn, as I move through the room; closer to the camera and backing away once again, the inner lining of the bodice is unveiled and hidden again. Flowing in tandem with my movement, the tension and anxiety of displaying the true self to others is revealed. This gives and takes relationship is offered to the viewer; teasing, but never fully exposing. I question what people must sacrifice for true connection, what the artist surrenders for recognition.
